One of the major new features introduced in iOS 4.1 is High Dynamic Range (HDR) photos. It seems like they will only be available to iPhone 4 users and won’t be available to iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G users.

At Apple’s special event on September 1, Steve Jobs explained that HDR photos are created using 3 photos taken in rapid succession, one normal, one under-exposed, and one over-exposed. The photos are then combined using sophisticated algorithms to create an enhanced composite photo. The webpage describes the new features in the iOS 4.1 software update on Apple’s website states that the HDR photography feature will be available on the iPhone. It doesn’t mention the availability of the feature on the iPhone 3GS and the iPhone 3G.

TiPB is speculating that one of the reasons for not bringing the feature to the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G users could be due to the slower process and lower 256MB RAM. The iPhone 4 comes with Apple’s A4 processor and 512MB RAM. There is still a glimmer of hope for the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G users as cdevwill has announced that he will be releasing a hack that will enable the feature for iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G users. It should already be expected that it will only be possible if you have a jailbroken iPhone. Users can download apps like Pro HDR that have been available on the App Store for quite sometime that bring this functionality to the iPhone. As reported earlier, according to Apple’s UK and Spanish Site, iOS 4.1 is scheduled to be released tomorrow, September 8 (although Apple has updated their International websites to say that iOS 4.1 will be coming soon just like the US site). In addition to the HDR feature, iOS 4.1 also includes features such as HD video upload, ability to buy TV show rentals and Game Center, Apple’s social gaming network, as well as the fix for the proximity sensor, Bluetooth, and iPhone 3G performance problems.

What are your thoughts of the HDR feature not coming to the iPhone 3GS or iPhone 3G? Are you looking forward to the iOS 4.1 update?

There is no reason as to why anyone can’t enjoy a new Android phone from Verizon anymore. Big Red announced for the first time that customers can subscribe to a prepaid monthly data plan for their smartphone devices and not have to worry about a contract. This includes a $30 prepaid unlimited data plan, which is very familiar since they have been offering $30 unlimited data plans on contract for quite some time now. Verizon customers will also have the option of opting to a cheaper $10 monthly data package which will allow up to 25MB of data per month with a $.20/MB overage fee. We are still curious whether this has any relation to the rumor which was floating around in July regarding Verizon possibly switching to AT&T styled tiered data plans.

Following are the 3G Smartphones and Multimedia phones eligible for the new data packages:

We posted an article earlier today with a warning from the iPhone Dev-Team to steer clear of the iOS 4.1 release, which is now available to download from iTunes. That’s right, it is now LIVE, and you are strongly advised NOT to update.

Again, this is NOT a big update, however Game Center is an new feature we are all looking forward to it, at least for those with supporting devices, and of course included in the update is the long overdue proximity sensor fix. All in all, it’s not quite worth it to lose all the fancy goodies we currently get with out 4.0 jailbreak/unlock.

So, If your Jailbroken and require an unlock, again, Please stay away from this update. But if you have no desire for either, feel free to update and post your comments below.

Don’t forget to backup your SHSH Blobs before updating to iOS4.1.
Apple is set to release the latest version of iOS sometime today, the new iOS 4.1 . It will bring a number of new features and enhancements with one of the most notable inclusions being Game Center – Apple’s all-new social gaming network.

You may be aware that Game Center is Apple’s matchmaking and leaderboard social network for iOS-based games that allows users to connect with their friends and play a wide array of games on their iDevices.

Game Center – which was first unveiled in April will make its debut in iOS 4.1, which mean it will not be supported on iPhone 2G as well as the first generation iPod Touch (as iOS 4 or later is not available for these devices). In addition to this, we have also learned that iPhone 3G users will not be able to access Game Center on their handset even though the model supports iOS 4.1.

Supported Devices:

Game Centre Features:

Search and invite friends to compete with them

Find out which games you’re friends are playing

Auto-match will find your friends or other players to play multiplayer games

Check their overall ranking from the Leaderboard and Achievements listings

Developers who were testing the service have seen their accounts deleted, indicating that Apple is getting ready for the official launch of Game Centre with the release of iOS 4.1, which is expected to be sometime today.

TinyUmbrella 04.02.09 Features:

Baseband Protection – Updating to 4.1 using TinyUmbrella will protect your baseband from update. THIS ONLY APPLIES TO IPHONE 4!!!!! If you have a 3G or 3GS and you update to 4.1 your baseband will likely be updated.

SHSH Retrieval from Cydia – If you don’t have your SHSH locally, TinyUmbrella will request them from Cydia on-demand; allowing the restore to continue

Automatically point hosts to Cydia – Once you close TinyUmbrella, it points your hosts file to Cydia (for further baseband protection and update/restores without TinyUmbrella)

iPod Touch 4G 4.1 support

IMPORTANT:

Do not update to iOS 4.1 if you wish to keep your unlock and jailbreak. The baseband protection only applies to iPhone 4. It’s a small yet very important note. 3G and 3GS phones are excluded.

We had reported that based on Apple’s UK site, iOS 4.1 will be released on September 8. Since then, the iPhone Dev Team has warned users who want to jailbreak and unlock their iPhone to stay away.

But we have some good news for jailbreakers, as iPhone Dev Team and folks at Spazio have hinted that Comex might release a JailbreakMe like web-based method to jailbreak iOS 4.1.

MuscleNerd of iPhone Dev Team revealed:

it’ll be userland JB if @comex can pull trifecta. Else, wait for new HW cycle (also remember: hole!=exploit)

According to iSpazio, Comex has two methods to jailbreak iOS 4.1. The first one is a userland jailbreak, which will allow him to release a tool like JailbreakMe to jailbreak iOS 4.1. The second one is based on a bootrom exploit like Blackra1n, which is more complicated and will take Comex more time to release it. Apple had released iOS 4.0.2 to fix the security hole, which was used in JailbreakMe 2.0 to jailbreak iOS 4.0.1 and iOS 4. So, it looks like Comex has discovered a new userland exploit.

Apple’s Official UK Site has this confirmation up that iOS 4.1 for iPhone and iPod touches will drop (today) on Wednesday, September 8th. This is probably the same day when the new iPod lineup for fall 2010 (iPod nano, iPod shuffle and iPod touch 4G) will also make it to the retail stores.

Today you’ll likely start seeing iTunes innocently offer you a new version of iOS “version 4.1″. As per the iPhone Dev-Team’s official blog -

Don’t accept it…it’s a trap!

If your iOS device relies on a jailbreak or a carrier unlock, make sure you keep your “clicky” fingers away from that tempting “Update” button in iTunes until and unless new jailbreak and unlock tools are available. There is currently no word as to when these new tools to be made available. Till then, make sure that you have PDF Patch installed from Cydia on iOS 4.0.1 to keep your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch safe from PDF vulnerability in iOS 4.0.1.

As per the iPhone Dev-Team blog, users who have their SHSH blobs saved can downgrade to iOS 4.0.1, but users who relay on the unlock if you upgrade to iOS 4.1, there is no way to revert to the older baseband at this time.

While those of you who have Cydia or TinyUmbrella backups of your FW hashes will always be able to get back to 4.0.1 if you make this mistake, this doesn’t hold for unlockers. There’s currently no known way to revert your baseband — if you update your baseband you’ll lose the ultrasn0w unlock, possible forever.
