In the days before the release of the iPhone, Nintendo was the undisputed king of handheld gaming. Currently, Nintendo sees Apple as one of their biggest rivals in the handheld gaming industry. The gaming apps found on iOS devices just caught the interest of gamers and non-gamers alike hurting Nintendo’s sales. The Kinect, originally developed by Microsoft is a pretty amazing device. Thanks to a few cameras and sensors, the Xbox add-on can accurately detect body movements in real time. Microsoft recently unveiled an SDK, which will allow developers to code their own applications for the device connected to Windows PCs, making good for more than just games. For those of you who don’t know, the term SDK, stands for “Software Development Kit,” and it is a way for companies to provide developers with information that takes advantage of a particular technology. Recently, Microsoft’s Israeli research and development team may have recently teased an upcoming Xbox 360 feature that is sure to catch the eye of several people: 3D gaming! Late last month, Microsoft’s R&D team posted a link from its official Twitter account pointing to a Hebrew-language. Gadgety.co.il posted about an interesting rumor regarding the tweet as well. The rumor suggests that Microsoft is currently prepping a software update for the Xbox 360 that will enable HD stereoscopic 3D. Included in Microsoft’s tweet was a question that translates to: “What do you think of a 3D console?”

Microsoft announced several new Xbox Live features today at the E3 video game conference. The features are designed to expand the number of content options available and new ways to discover them as well. The Xbox Live service will soon make millions of new videos all available through partnerships, including one announced with YouTube. With a revamp to the Xbox Live experience, users will be able to navigate through the service and all of the new pieces of content with voice control powered by Microsoft’s Kinect and search powered by its Bing search engine.

The US-based PlayStation Network users will now be able to register for a free Identity Protection service thanks to an arrangement made by Sony with a company named Debix. On May 3rd, Sony promised all customers affected by the recent break-ins into the PlayStation Network system, free identity theft protection from Debix for one year. The company is now delivering on that promise, and users can sign up for the identity protection starting today. As Sony explained in an email sent to every active PSN customer:

A PlayStation 3 hacker by the name of KaKaRoToKS recently released an SGTPuzzles PS3 homebrew port of Simon Tatham’s Portable Puzzle Collection dubbed the Humble Homebrew Collection, which currently includes 33 puzzle games for both jailbreak and PS3 CFW (PlayStation 3 custom firmware) users. The collection of apps it provides can be used on a jailbroken PlayStation 3, Linux, Windows, Mac, or Android.

Microsoft is giving students a reason to turn their backs on the Mac’s by announcing a new offer to help promote PC’s running Windows 7 operating system. Starting May 22, Microsoft is offering a free XBox 360 (with 4GB of storage) to folks who pay $699 or more for a Windows 7 PC – note they do not say “laptop,” which suggests that makers like HP and Dell are trying to boost their waning, post-PC sales.

According to reports coming in from Eurogamer, NeoGaf, and Nyleveia Sony’s PlayStation Network password reset system (the one that was put into place after the PSN hack) has been compromised, allowing hackers to change a PSN password if they know your email and date of birth. This information was exactly the same information that was released in the original hack. As a result, Sony has taken the password reset system offline.
