This guide is for Windows only and will teach you how to jailbreak various iOS devices using the newly released tool, Absinthe. The current version of Absinthe is 0.3. It should be noted that this is an UNTETHERED JAILBREAK, meaning that you will be able to reboot your phone just like you normally would at any time.

This guide works with the following device/firmware combinations:

iPhone 4S | 5.0 (9A334)

iPhone 4S | 5.0.1 (9A405)

iPhone 4S | “other” 5.0.1 (9A406)

iPad2 (CDMA) | 5.0.1 (9A405)

iPad2 (GSM) | 5.0.1 (9A405)

iPad2 (Wi-Fi) | 5.0.1 (9A405)

It should also be noted that the team that put this jailbreak together included both Saurik and MuscleNerd, both of which are core members of the iPhone Dev Team; three members of the Chronic Dev Team including posixninja, pod2g, and nikias; and the legendary planetbeing, who is the iOS hacker/developer who is responsible for initially porting both Android and Linux to the iPhone) is accepting donations. Feel free to donate via PayPal if you want to show some support.

PLEASE READ BEFORE CONTINUING:

Absinthe create a backup and restores it onto your device as part of the way it gets files on the device, so we recommend the device is mostly empty when you start the process. To do this, it is advised to create a backup in in iTunes first (connect to iTunes and sync). If you are using iCloud to backup, go to Settings > iCloud > Storage and Backup > Backup Now.

Once you have backed up, on your device go to Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings. As mentioned, make sure you have a backup of your content first. You don’t need to Erase All Content and Settings if you don’t want to, but the jailbreak could take up to 20-30 minutes to complete if you don’t, depending on your device that is.

Follow the steps below to successfully jailbreak your iOS device:

Download the Windows version of Absinthe 0.3 from the following link (http://cache.greenpois0n.com/dl/absinthe-win-0.3.zip)

Once downloaded, double click the zip file to unzip it if your browser didn’t already automatically unzip the file.

(Make sure your device is connected first) Double-click Absinthe to launch it and you will see the Absinthe home screen. Absinthe at this point should tell you what device and firmware version is detected.

Press the jailbreak button. Once you do this, Absinthe will go through a few status messages while it jailbreaks your device. It will stop for a bit at Waiting for reboot – not done yet, don’t unplug your device yet!

Once the device has finished rebooting, it will continue the jailbreak. During this process, do not touch or unplug your iOS device.

Once the process has finished in Absinthe, it will alert you to unlock the screen if necessary and tap “Absinthe” icon to finish the jailbreak. Remember, the icon may not be on the first pay, so you might have to scroll to find it.

Tapping the icon will bring up a webview with a white page, and then your device will restart. Just a quick note: If you see an “Error establishing database connection” error or a white screen, which lasts longer than 1 minute, please go to Settings and turn on VPN, and wait instead. The VPN connection will give an error (which is normal). At this point, a reboot should happen a few moments after the error.

You will see the Apple logo with a progress bar quickly as the device restarts and then your device will power back on. Just a quick note: The Set Up iPhone (or iPad) GUI you see when you restore an iOS Device will now appear. If you backed up with iCloud at the beginning of this tutorial, please choose Restore from iCloud Backup in the Set Up iPhone GUI, and restore from the backup you took at the beginning of this guide. The iDevice will then restore from backup, reboot, and you’re good to go.

Cydia is now on your device where the Absinthe icon was before

That’s it! Your device is not jailbroken.

Apple recently released iOS 5.0.1 and the jailbreak community has been advised to not upgrade. Pod2g recently found an exploit that may help to provide an untethered jailbreak and this exploit is patched on iOS 5.0.1. If you like many are seeking to use an untethered jailbreak, it would be wise to stay on iOS 5.0 because thats where the untethered jailbreak will be. For those of you who accidentally upgraded or unknowingly upgraded to iOS 5.0.1 you may be wondering how to downgrade back to iOS 5.0. In this case, you may downgrade if you have an SHSH previously saved. To do so, follow the procedure outlined below:

Required Files and Software

Latest version of TinyUmbrella (Mac) (Windows)

Redsn0w 0.9.9b8 (Mac) (Windows)

iOS 5.0 Saved SHSH (needed from before)

iTunes (latest)

iOS5 IPSW (iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPad, iPod Touch 3G, iPod Touch 4G)

Downgrade iOS 5.0.1 To iOS 5.0 With Saved SHSH

Connect your iPhone to your computer and open TinyUmbrella.

Click on Save SHSH (the iOS 5 SHSH will only show if you have it saved previously). Once saved, close TinyUmbrella.

Open RedSn0w 0.9.9b8 and go to Extras > SHSH Blobs > then click Submit (it will open a window). Here, browse to the Saved SHSH file (which is in the directory C:/User/Acount Name/.shsh folder. (the saved SHSH file for iOS 5.0)

After submitting it, you will see the Blobs Submission Report.

Now click on Stich, give it the same SHSH file (which you previously submitted) and give the SHSH file, then the iOS 5.0 IPSW file. Wait for it to complete.

Now open TinyUmbrella and go to the Advanced tab. Here, check all the boxes and then close it.

Now restore the Stiched IPSW file with iTunes in DFU mode.

Voila – you’re done! At this point we would recommend staying on iOS 5.0 and waiting for further news from the jailbreak community devs.

For those of you who do NOT have an SHSH file saved, you are currently out of luck. If you are on iOS 5.0.1, your current option is to jailbreak utilizing RedSn0w 0.9.9b8 or Sn0wbreeze 2.8b11. This jailbreak will be a tethered jailbreak, which means that you will have to connect your iOS device to your computer and “just boot” utilizing the software for every time you need to boot. You can download BigBoss’s Semi-Tether package from Cydia to help ease the pain of a tethered jailbreak. The Semi-Tether allows you to boot your iOS device and use all the stock applications until you can “just boot” with your computer as opposed to being stuck on the boot logo. As of right now, it is a decent alternative to allow you to use your iOS device for main functions.

If you have an iPhone 4 and an Apple Developer account, then you can download the iOS 5 b1 firmware. Thanks to the iPhone Dev Team, you can also jailbreak iOS 5 b1 using RedSn0w for the Mac. Just so you know, this procedure will cause you to upgrade your baseband, which will potentially ruin your chances for an unlock. It will not hacktivate so you must have your UDID registered with a developer and it is tethered.

Supported devices:

iPod touch 3G

iPod touch 4G

iPad 1

iPhone3GS

iPhone4 (GSM)

iPhone4 (CDMA)

Note:

RedSn0w 0.9.8b1 is purely for developers who want to develop jailbreak apps for iOS 5 and iOS 5 beta is currently available to developers only. This RedSn0w jailbreak provides tethered iOS 5 jailbreak for now. RedSn0w 0.9.8b1 will not hacktivate iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch.

The iPhone Dev-Team notes that this version of RedSn0w will likely work to jailbreak future iOS 5 betas by pointing to the 5.0b1 IPSW.

[How To] Jailbreak iOS 5 Beta 1 With Redsn0w 0.9.8b1:

Step 1:

Download the necessary files from the section above and place them in a folder on your desktop.

Step 2:

Connect your iPhone to the computer and launch iTunes. Select your iPhone from the devices on the left. After doing so, hold Option and click the Restore button. (Restore is preferred as it won’t create any wasted space on your iPhone.)

Now navigate to the folder on your desktop and select the 5.0b1 firmware ipsw. Click the Choose button to continue.

Step 3:

Once iTunes has finished updating your iPhone to the desired firmware open the folder on your desktop and launch the Redsn0w application from the redsn0w folder we extracted earlier.

Step 4:

Once RedSn0w opens click the Browse button:

Step 5:

Select the 5.0b1 firmware IPSW placed in the folder on your desktop then click Open.

Step 6:

Once the firmware has been verified click the Next button to continue.

Step 7:

RedSn0w will now prepare the jailbreak data (this may take some time, just be patient)

Step 8:

From this window you can select the jailbreak options that you would like. Make sure Cydia is selected and click the Next button to continue:

Step 9:

Please plug your iPhone into the computer and make sure its OFF then click the Next button:

Step 10:

RedSn0w will now require you to enter DFU mode

Hold down both the Home button and the Power button for 10 seconds.

Release the Power button and continue holding the Home button until RedSn0w detects the device.

Step 11:

Your iPhone will now reboot:

Step 12:

RedSn0w will then begin uploading the new RAM Disk and Kernel.

Step 13:

Once this is complete you will be notified that RedSn0w is done. Click the Finish button. When your iPhone finishes rebooting (5 minutes or so) it will be jailbroken with Cydia on the SpringBoard.

CyanogenMod is a custom developed OS for Android phones that frees them from all kind of operator shackles while kicking out any branded bloatware / apps on board. There is some great news for all those on Sprint who opted to go for the all new Google Nexus S 4G. Android 2.3.x Gingerbread CyanogenMod 7.1 Custom ROM in shape of nightly builds is already available for users to flash and enjoy. CM builds are mostly out of the box AOSP Android source code with mods and hacks integrated to provide optimum user experience.

Note:

The CM nightly builds are mostly auto complied with source kernel of a specific handset and don’t come with any stability guarantees. However CyanogenMod is the most extensively tested, utilized and deployed custom firmware for Android handsets with root. And most of the users have found CM Nightly Builds as stable as final releases or release candidates. Currently there are two nightly releases of CM 7.1 Android 2.3 Gingerbread Custom ROM for Nexus S 4G available and we believe that soon there will be a release candidate available as well. If you are worried that it may make your device unstable then wait for a stable Non-nightly release. And if you want to give it a go then follow the steps below.

Requirements:

Google Nexus S 4G With Unlocked Bootloader And Root. (You can refer to our Rooting Nexus S 4G guide for instructions)

CyanogenMod 7.x Android 2.3 Gingerbread Custom ROM For Nexus S 4G [Download]

Instructions:

The first step is to download CyanogenMod 7.1 ROM for Nexus S 4G and save the file on your desktop. Download link is provided in requirements section above.

Once done, connect your phone to the computer, tap on Connect as USB disk drive and copy the downloaded ROM file to SD Card root.

Now download and install ROM Manager from Android Market on your phone.

After the installation is complete, launch ROM Manager and tap on Flash ClockworkMod Recovery. Make sure that you phone is connected over a stable Wi-Fi internet connection before you install CWM recovery.

Now use in-app option to reboot your phone in Recovery.

Once you phone reboots into recovery, first make a Nandroid backup and then WIPE data / Factory Reset.

Now go to recovery main menu and navigate down to Install Zip From SD Card.

In the resulting menu, select CM 7.1 ROM file you earlier copied to SD Card root.

Now sit back and relax while CM installs on your phone.

After installation is complete, your phone will automatically reboot and you will now be enjoying the awesomeness of CM 7 on your Nexus S 4G.

CyanogenMod doesn’t come pre-integrated with Google Apps and add-ons so you will need to manually download them from here and flash through Recovery.

In case you are stuck, need support or want to give feedback, then please visit the official XDA thread for this purpose. It is worth mentioning again that CM Nightly builds do not come with any guarantees and they can turn your phone into a brick for several reasons. So be extremely cautious and careful when you attempt this guide.

XDA forum member MarcHoover has developed a ‘USB Storage Enabler Tool’ for Windows Phone 7 which makes it easy to enable or disable the WP7 USB functionality.

Rumors from earlier this week suggest that Icy, Ripdevs Cydia alternative that was shut down and made open source after firmware 3.1.x release, is set to make appearance sometime this week. Folks from Infini-Dev Team have been working hard to bring us back our old Cydia alternative, the fast and light-weight Icy.

If you are unaware, Icy managed and offered by Ripdevs is a software application just like Cydia. It allows you to browse and download applications, tweaks, etc just like Cydia. Icy (beta) is now available for your iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch.

As of now, Icy has been completely updated to work on iOS 4.x and has entered beta stage. It is being tested for bugs. And since these are no rumours, you can actually go ahead and download the beta version of Icy from the link below.

Thanks to Infini-Dev Team for their hard work.

[How To] Install Icy on iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch:

Back when iOS 4.3 was still in beta, it was all about the new fancy multitouch gestures for switching between apps as well as returning to the home screen on iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. The feature actually never found its way into the final release unless you use Xcode and turn your iDevice into developer hardware. This isn’t strictly true though. A new tweak is now available on the jailbreak store, Cydia, that will enabled the aforementioned multitouch gestures with the tap of a button.

According to the developer:

You will of course need to have a jailbroken iPhone or iPod Touch to install it. You can follow our step by step guide posted here to jailbreak your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch with RedSn0w on iOS 4.3.1, or with PwnageTool 4.3 (untethered / tethered), or with Sn0wBreeze on Windows if you haven’t already.

You have to just simply download MT Gestures via the ModMyI repo and activate it inside WinterBoard.

After that is done, you’ll have access to some handy dandy new gestures, which include the following:

Close fingers to get back to Homescreen (with four or five fingers);

Scroll up or down to show/hide multitasking tray (with four or five fingers);

Scroll left or right to switch between apps (with four or five fingers).

The only hiccup this has is that the tweak currently only works with the iPhone 4 an iPod Touch 4G. Support for the iPad is currently on its way.

The new version support iOS 4.3.1, it is basically a patch fix and is developed by msft_guy and iH8sn0w (developer behind Sn0wbreeze). The previous version of Ultrasn0w was unable to unlock iPhone 4 and 3GS devices on iOS 4.3.1, but now you can use Ultrasn0w 4.3.1 fixer to unlock your device.

Remember the Ultrsn0w 4.3.1 unlock is compatible with devices running iOS 4.3.1 firmware only. It WILL NOT unlock higher basebands, but will continue to unlock the old ones. You can say that its just a new version of Ultrasn0w for people who have upgraded to iOS 4.3 and also jailbroken it using Redsn0w 0.9.6RC9, PwnageTool 4.3 or Sn0wbreeze 2.5. If you are still confuded, it will ONLY be compatible with basebands which includes 01.59.00 / 04.26.08 / 05.11.07 / 05.12.01 / 05.13.04 / 06.15.00.

To make the patch available, add the following link to Cydia Sources – http://cydia.pushfix.info/. You can also follow the step by step guide posted below:
