If you are using Mobile Safari on iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch running iOS 5.1, than you should be cautious of a security issue that involves address bar spoofing. The issue was discovered by David Vieira-Kurz of MajorSecurity, and involves “an error within the handling of URLs when using javascript’s window open() method.” This can be exploited by malicious sites to display custom URLs, potentially fooling users into supplying personal information to a malicious website (since the Safari address bar can display a totally different address than the website that is actually being displayed.

MajorSecurity has notified Apple of the issue and it is at the point where it is likely just a matter of time before Apple releases the patch to address the problem. While Apple works on a fix for the issue, it is probably a good idea to avoid opening untrusted links and think twice about sending personal information to any website that asks for it through Safari on your iOS device.

The security firm also created a sample web page to show the vulnerability in action. If you are interested in checking it out, open the following URL on your iOS device (one with iOS 5.1 installed):

MobileSafari iOS 5.1 – Address bar spoofing example

Click the demo at the top of the page and you will see a site that very closely resembles Apple’s official site but is actually hosted by MajorSecurity.

The iOS developer, @Notcom recently released an updated version of his TinyUmbrella to version 5.10.08. TinyUmbrella 5.10.08 can save iOS 5.1 SHSH blobs for the new iPad (iPad 3) and Apple TV 3G. You can download TinyUmbrella 5.10.08from the link below.

For those of you who don’t already know, TinyUmbrella lets you save SHSH blobs for the Apple TV, iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch, which are required to be able to downgrade the device firmware to an older version. Alternatively, you can use tools like SHSH Blob Extractor or iSHSHit.

This is what Notcom has posted on his blog about this TinyUmbrella 5.10.08 update:

Welcome to the ‘Save SHSH’ Family!

With the new iPad 3 and Apple TV 3, it’s been quite busy. Add to that all the cool new information surrounding a few new iOS 5.1 jailbreaks and we have quite the party.
TinyUmbrella now has support for saving 5.1 SHSH for Apple TV 3 and the iPad 3 (all versions). As of now we still cannot restore them but we are working on getting that working from a bunch of angles. I’ll let you know more when I do.

Save your SHSH!

The iPhone Dev Team has successfully jailbroken the new iPad, but there has been no indication of the release of a jailbreak tool at the moment. MuscleNerd tweeted photos of the Jailbreak along with the disclaimer “Just a first step, still lots of work to do! No ETA!”

It appears that there are several potential paths to a jailbreak:

We can confirm that the method used to jailbreak the iPad2 4 months ago still works even in 5.1. That means we’ll at least be able to get our foot in the door to get the required kernel dumps on the iPad3. That’s an important step, but by no means is it the end of the story.

Those of you following @i0n1c may have noticed he’s already tweeted pictures of his iPad2 jailbroken at 5.1. As far as we know, he’s using a method completely unrelated to the one mentioned above. That would be great news!

We’ve also seen bits and pieces of an entirely different jailbreak method being investigated by someone close to the Cydia repo scene.

That’s three different angles, and we’re not even including the continuous work @pod2g makes towards a new jailbreak!

The infamous Germany based iOS hacker involved in the jailbreak scene Stefan Esser, more commonly known as i0n1c who was previously responsible for research and work which ended in a jailbreak for iOS 4 which spanned three software updates and was heavily involved behind the scenes in the production of the Absinthe based jailbreak. I0n1c has once again been showing off his jailbreak ninja skills, first of all by being the first to showcase a jailbreak for the iPad 2 running iOS 5.1 and now the show has shifted towards the iPhone Dev Team’s front man MuscleNerd, who has successfully jailbroken the new iPad in its full glory running iOS 5.1. He posted screenshot on Twitter showing off the new iPad running the latest build of Cydia, which is 1.1.5:

While folks out there were still trying to score themselves the new iPad, MuscleNerd used his skills to bypass Apple’s restrictions and get our beloved Cydia working.

In the meantime, for those of you who own A4 devices (iPhone 4, iPad 1, iPod touches) can jailbreak the latest iOS 5.1 (tethered), and iOS 5.0.1 (untethered) using Redsn0w, Sn0wbreeze. For those with A5 devices (iPhone 4S and iPad 2) on iOS 5.0.1 can use Absinthe on Windows or Mac.

Sn0wbreeze 2.9.2 jailbreak for iOS 5.1 supports iPhone 4, 3GS, iPod Touch 4G, 3G and iPad 1.

No A5-devices support (iPhone 4S, iPad 2)

Why is there no A5 support? :~(

A low level (DFU/iBoot/LLB) exploit is required to start the restoration of custom IPSWs. The past two jailbreaks (JailbreakMe & absinthe) for the A5 worked within iOS itself. These exploits are not capable of bringing the iDevice into a state where it will accept custom IPSWs. Therefore, an A5 device cannot currently downgrade to an iOS revision that Apple is no longer signing (even with SHSH blobs) and it cannot preserve the baseband when updating to a newer iOS revision.

While the future may always seem to get more narrower… Keep your head high and continue to be open minded.

iPhone Dev-team has released RedSn0w 0.9.6b10 which brings tethered jailbreak for iOS 5.1 firmware. RedSn0w0.9.10b6 supports non-A5 devices on iOS 5.1 which are exploitable to GeoHot’s Limera1n exploit. You can download RedSn0w 0.9.10b6 for Mac and Windows from the links below.

Supported Devices:

iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS

iPod Touch 4G, 3G

iPad 1

Download RedSn0w 0.9.10b6

RedSn0w 0.9.10b6 is available for both Windows and Mac OS. You can download it from the links below:

Download Redsn0w 0.9.10b6 for OS X

Download iOS 5.1

Download iTunes 10.6

Note:

It’s a tethered jailbreak which requires you to connect your device to your computer, every time you reboot your device, and use “Just Boot” feature in RedSn0w to boot in into jailbreak mode. If you turn on the device without using “Just Boot” feature, jailbreak apps won’t work (neither will Safari).

It’s untethered jailbreak iOS 5.1 for iPhone 3GS (old bootrom) users.

UltraSn0w unlockers MUST use RedSn0w to create Custom IPSW. and then restore using that custom firmware. AVOID STOCK FIRMWARE. UltraSn0w will be updated with iOS 5.1 support in a couple of days (no new baseband support)

From Dev-Team official Blog:

we realize that some of you non-A5 jailbreakers are itching to get to 5.1, even though there seems to be no compelling new feature there. Because of geohot’s limera1n exploit, those with devices earlier than the iPad 2 can test the 5.1 jailbreak waters if they really want to, using redsn0w 0.9.10b6. Here’s what you need to know:

This is a *tethered* 5.1 jailbreak for non-A5 devices. You’ll need to use redsn0w to “Just Boot” your device every time it power cycles, otherwise jailbreak apps won’t work (neither will Safari).

If you use ultrasn0w for your carrier unlock, be sure to use a custom IPSW to get to 5.1 first! Don’t ever restore to a stock Apple IPSW! Use redsn0w’s “Custom IPSW” button to create a NO_BB_* version of the 5.1 IPSW and restore to that instead of the stock one. (That option is available only to 3GS and iPhone4-GSM owners.) ultrasn0w itself will be updated for 5.1 in the next few days (same baseband support, not 5.1’s baseband).

If you’re lucky enough to have an old-bootrom 3GS, this jailbreak is actually untethered (redsn0w will figure that part out automatically).

While we were at it, we added @pod2g’s steaks4uce exploit to support MC models of the iPod touch 2G (whose last firmware was 4.2.1). So now redsn0w will auto-detect and jailbreak both MB and MC versions of that older device.

iBooks won’t work until a future update of redsn0w

We previously heard some rumors about the possibility of a new development team working on releasing a new SIM interposer solution similar to the popular Gevey SIM. This would provide iPhone 4S users with the elusive unlock if it was to surface. If the recent video released on YouTube by the folks over at ApplenBerry is true, it would seem that the release of the new Gevey Ultra S will eventually provide unlock satisfaction to the owners of a GSM iPhone 4S.

The video demonstrates the team installing a SIM card in an iPhone 4S using the new Gevey Ultra S interposer. This allows previously unavailable network connections to be made on an iPhone 4S running iOS 5.0 and iOS 5.0.1 with modern firmware versions 1.0.11, 1.0.13, and 1.0.14. The Gevey Ultra S is also being advertised as a true plug and play SIM-unlocking interposer which is compatible with all of the GSM iPhone 4S devices. The tool is said to have a lower power consumption than previous offerings and doesn’t require any physical modifications to the SIM itself.

Product Description:

No Need to Dial International Emergency Number 112

There is now no need to dial the international emergency number (112) during installation or when rebooting your iPhone 4S. Our learning technology allows for true plug-and-play iPhone 4S unlock solution. Beware of solutions that require you to CONNECT to an emergency number. This violates telecommunication abuse policies and lead to service cancelation on some networks.

Decrease Power Consumption

The F981 chipset in our new GEVEY™ Ultra S is engineered to operate under the 3- volt standard. That means your battery will last just as long as it would without the GEVEY™ Ultra S. Beware of counterfeit solutions claiming to use a similar chipset. We’ve invested the time and money to engineer our new GEVEY™ Ultra S with better power efficiency. This kind of technology can’t be duplicated or implemented on cheaper chipsets.

GEVEY™ True Plug-and-Play Unlocking SIM Interposer

Now you can unlock your iPhone 4S with the re-engineered GEVEY™ Ultra S SIM interposer. Our new technology takes advantage of a new exploit that fully unlocks your iPhone 4S. It’s true plug-and-play functionality, so just pop it in and unlock your phone with the original sim card. If you don’t have the original sim card, additional programming may be required. Further instructions will be sent with your GEVEY™ Ultra S package.

Untethered Unlock with no Jailbreak Needed

With our new GEVEY™ Ultra S, you won’t have to connect to any external device to unlock your iPhone 4S. Even better, jailbreaking is not necessary so you won’t void your Apple warranty.

Compatible with all GSM iPhone 4S SIM Cards

The new GEVEY™ Ultra S is now a single interposer that works for all networks. It actually “learns” your network, so there is no need to select a specific GEVEY™ Ultra S for your service carrier. A new GEVEY™ Ultra S comes in learning mode, but after inserting the GEVEY™ Ultra S and your SIM card in your iPhone 4S, our technology learns your network types and settings for a true plug-and-play unlock solution.

One caveat of this exploit is that, if for some reason you need to change your current SIM with a SIM card from a different carrier, you will need to reset your GEVEY™ Ultra S with the reset SIM included with your genuine GEVEY™ Ultra S. Beware of other solutions that claim to circumvent this issue. It is simply not possible when taking advantage of this new exploit in the iPhone 4S firmware.

Complete Unlock with all 2G and 3G Data Services

Purchase genuine GEVEY™ products and completely unblock all 2G and 3G data- transfer functionality. By default, your network carrier has blocked data network settings inside your iPhone 4S firmware. You will need to use the original network carrier’s SIM to activate your iPhone, and our GEVEY™ Ultra S will unlock all functionality available by your network.

Be aware that some telecommunication carriers restrict data services to network phones only. Unfortunately, this limitation is unrelated to SIM cards and phone locking technology, so there is no phone unlocking solution that can guarantee connectivity to every data network. Check with your intended carrier to confirm data networks like 2G and 3G services are allowed on out-of-network phones.

No SIM Card Cutting or Physical Modifications

The new GEVEY™ Ultra S is engineered using the F981 chipset, which is more expensive but performs a whole lot better than cheaper solutions. We don’t manipulate, polish, or sand down cheaper microchips to make our SIM interposer small enough to fit, and there is no need for you to cut your SIM card or modify your iPhone 4S in any way.

Beware of counterfeit GEVEY™ products claiming to use the F981 chipset and selling for less than our rock bottom pricing. Most people won’t be able to tell the difference by visual inspection, but some cheaper, larger chips used in these solutions are sanded, cut, or polished to fit in your iPhone 4S. These solutions expose sensitive electronic components and are notoriously prone to overheating, short-circuit, and breakage.

Guaranteed Better Reception than Last Generation Unlocking Solutions

Now that we no longer take advantage of the old exploits, we’ve re-engineered the GEVEY™ Ultra S for enhanced signal strength with strong, consistent voice and data communication. Now there is no compromise in reception when choosing genuine GEVEY™ products.

RIM has finally released the long awaited major updated the Blackberry Playbook OS to include two services that have been long discussed and much anticipated: integrated email support and Android app availability.

PlayBook OS 2.0 allows users to enjoy native calendar, messaging and e-mail apps. The new e-mail app also includes an extended unified function, integrating not only multiple e-mail accounts as well as Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter messages.

Social integration also extends to the new calendar app that integrates information from social networks in addition to standard work and personal events and appointments if optioned by a user. Contacts are now also dynamically populated with updated information from Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn as well.

As expected, the other headlining feature is the new Android app wrapper built in to the OS, allowing ‘a range of Android apps’ to be run on the PlayBook. For ease of use, compatible apps can be found in the BlackBerry App World.

BlackBerry Bridge has also received an overhaul allowing users to view and edit documents, webpages, emails and photos that appear on users BlackBerry smartphones. The latest version also allows users to use their BlackBerry smartphone as a wireless keyboard and mouse for a PlayBook. Also announced is a new video store for BlackBerry PlayBook users.

The update is being pushed OTA to devices now and can be accessed through the settings function. RIM has also devoted a new microsite to demonstrate the updated OS in action.

A recent report from Digitimes claims that the Android’s new OS dubbed “Jelly Bean” is scheduled to launch at some pint in the second quarter. The publication feels confident enough to quote a number of Taiwanese suppliers claiming that we will see a range of tablet devices and notebooks which are capable of running dual operating systems.

The publication also claims that vendors will be able to add Android 5.0 to a Windows 8-based tablet or notebook, allowing users to switch between the operating systems without a reboot.

Google could be looking at Android 5.0 Jelly Bean as a way to resurrect its notebook/netbook ambitions. Google already has a netbook OS, called Chrome, but it has failed to really grab any share. It is available in a handful of inexpensive netbooks from manufacturers such as Samsung.

The latest version of the Android operating system, known as Ice Cream Sandwich, was announced in May of last year before being showcased on the Galaxy Nexus smartphone later in October. Four months down the line and it seems that only approximately 1% of Android devices are running versions of Android 4.0, bring about big concerns and showing that the adoption of the latest OS has been a lot slower than expected.

With Microsoft getting set to release its brand new Windows 8 operating system in the third quarter of 2012, the speculation suggests that Google are looking for an end of quarter two release for Jelly Bean to provide competition for Windows 8.

Considering that the hardware requirements for Windows 8 would prevent users from installing a second OS on ARM-based PCs due to a locked Secure Boot system. What’s not known is if Microsoft’s manufacturing partners would have permission to ignore that when designing machines. What’s also interesting is that no mention of smartphones is made with respect to Android 5.0. Google specifically designed Android 4.0 to combine the best features of Android 3.2 with Android 2.3 and create a master platform that works equally well on smartphones and tablets. So far, only one Android 4.0 smartphone is available, though Android 4.0 tablets are expected to arrive soon. Android 4.0 has barely had a chance to get a foothold in the market.

Google also pushed its I/O developers conference back by six weeks, to the end of June rather than the middle of May. Does Google need this extra six weeks to finish work on products that will be announced at I/O?

Microsoft officially announced the new branding of it’s upcoming Windows 8 Metro Style logo which will be used across the upcoming operating system. Microsoft also stated that the logo is a Window rather than the traditional flag found in earlier versions of Windows. “We wanted the new logo to be both modern and classic,” says Microsoft’s Sam Moreau.

Microsoft hired high-powered design consultancy Pentagram to come up with the new look. According to Moreau, the firm wanted to move away from the previous Windows logo that looked more like a flag than a window. “Windows’ really is a beautiful metaphor for computing, and with the new logo we wanted to celebrate the idea of a window, in perspective,” Moreau wrote.

Programs running in the Metro mode of Windows 8 take up the entire computer screen. There’s no chrome around the app, the frame that separates it from other apps and the desktop. Microsoft has also done away with the toolbar that runs on the bottom, or the side, of the desktop. And while users can switch to the traditional Windows desktop on Windows 8, the Metro version eliminates the interface showing multiple windows of running apps.

The logo uses flat colors and clean lines and shapes to convey the message of Metro and will change color based on the core theme color used in Windows 8. “When you change your color, the logo changes to reflect you,” explained Moreau. Microsoft will use the logo in the new charms bar for Windows 8, adopting the chosen theme accent color.

We are expecting to see the new logo in the Windows 8 Consumer Preview, due on February 29th.
