Apple Removes Flagrant Copycat Apps From AppStore

Anton_Sinelnikov_AppStore

Apple has removed a number of copycat apps that mimicked the titles of successful games after they provoked a public outcry from developers over the issue. Drastic action has been taken against developers who fake app reviews to pump up chart position, “name squat” on titles that have become popular but haven’t yet released a genuine iOS version or, as it did today, take down apps that are clearly counterfeit versions of other apps.

The British newspaper The Guardian has even recently published a profile on Anton Sinelnikov, the coder behind a number of the fake apps — one of which, Temple Jump, actually hit the top spot in the paid app charts instead of the [...]

Windows 8 Storage Explained – Scaling, Resiliency, and Efficiency

Windows 8-Storage-Spaces

Microsoft updated the Building Windows 8 blog with details on the next-gen platform’s new Storage Spaces feature. Storage Spaces based on the Drive Extender concept from Windows Home Server days, allowing the system to pool physical hard drives of various sizes and interfaces to redundantly store data for scale, resiliency, and efficiency.

The system works like a RAID setup but the physical hard drives are grouped into a larger storage pool, which is then split up into spaces. The disks in a pool can be of mismatched sizes and of different interface technologies, such as USB, SATA, and Serial Attached SCSI. New disks can be added anytime while others can be connected but kept on [...]

iOS 5.1 Beta References Quad Core CPUs For Next Gen iDevices

Apple-A6

Apple may be planning to put a quad-core A6 chip inside its next iPad or iPhone, according to recent references of Quad Core CPU’s discovered in iOS 5.1 Beta.

In this hidden panel, single-core A4s are referred to as “/cores/core.0″ while dual-core A5s are “/cores/core.1.” Now a new listing, “/cores/core.3,” is popping up which, if you start counting with zero, indicates a CPU packing four cores. This doesn’t mean that Apple even has this up and running on test hardware yet, though, merely that software support for quad-core chips is in the works.

Of course just from this discovery we [...]

[How To] Downgrade iOS 5.0.1 To 5.0 With Saved SHSH

downgrade-ios-5.0.1-to-5.0

Apple recently released iOS 5.0.1 and the jailbreak community has been advised to not upgrade. Pod2g recently found an exploit that may help to provide an untethered jailbreak and this exploit is patched on iOS 5.0.1. If you like many are seeking to use an untethered jailbreak, it would be wise to stay on iOS 5.0 because thats where the untethered jailbreak will be. For those of you who accidentally upgraded or unknowingly upgraded to iOS 5.0.1 you may be wondering how to downgrade back to iOS 5.0. In this case, you may downgrade if you have an SHSH previously saved. To do so, follow the procedure outlined below:

Required Files and Software Latest [...]

Apple’s iCloud Service Down For Many Users

iCloud_metalback

Apple’s iCloud service seems to be experiencing some technical difficulties as many users are reporting the service to be not working properly. According to Apple’s System Status support page, the service is down for some users. Apple has mentioned the following: “Users may be unable to access iCloud services. Normal service will be restored ASAP” as seen in the picture above.

It currently hasn’t been specified why this issue has risen but rest assured, Apple is working to quickly resolve the matter. I would imagine the issue would be resolved as soon as possible as iCloud not working properly would probably anger and frustrate quite a number of iOS device owners.

It [...]

Sn0wbreeze v2.8b11 Released – Supports iOS 5.0.1

sn0wbreeze_gfxlogo

iOS 5.0.1 was Apple’s answer to the battery problems plaguing iOS 5. Although, it has been reported that iOS 5.0.1 doesn’t seem to be fixing the problem at all. iOS 5.0.1 also plugs up some important jailbreak exploits that hackers are working on using to develop the untethered jailbreak for iOS 5. Since it plugs up those exploits, Pod2g recommended not upgrading so that you can remain on the firmware that will support the untethered jailbreak when it comes out. If, however, you’re too late and you’ve installed iOS 5.0.1 and are having trouble downgrading, you can still have a tethered jailbreak for your device. iH8sn0w tweeted just a few minutes ago that sn0wbreeze has [...]

Jailbreakers Warned To Avoid Upgrading To iOS 5.0.1 By pod2g

pod2g_iOS501warning_tweet

We recently reported that ex-Chronic Dev Team member pod2g tweeted out that he found an untether bug for iOS 5. Other than the information given previously, it is unknown on how far he’s gotten as well as when we can expect public release. Although he’s remained MIA for the last couple of months or so, he seems to be actively keeping us updated on what’s in store. Eight hours ago, he tweeted out a warning to those who want to update to iOS 5.0.1 upon release.

According to his tweet, iOS 5.0.1 will close an iOS security bug found by Charlie Miller that makes exploits dramatically easier to tackle. This would imply that a jailbreak for [...]
