Microsoft updated the Building Windows 8 blog with details on the next-gen platform’s new Storage Spaces feature. Storage Spaces based on the Drive Extender concept from Windows Home Server days, allowing the system to pool physical hard drives of various sizes and interfaces to redundantly store data for scale, resiliency, and efficiency.
The system works like a RAID setup but the physical hard drives are grouped into a larger storage pool, which is then split up into spaces. The disks in a pool can be of mismatched sizes and of different interface technologies, such as USB, SATA, and Serial Attached SCSI. New disks can be added anytime while others can be connected but kept on [...]

Just a day after releasing iTunes 10.3 to support some early iCloud features such as automatic downloads and access to previously purchased content, Apple has released iTunes 10.3.1, to fix critical issues in the application.
The documentation accompanying the release and Apple’s support page merely offer the same information as found with the original iTunes 10.3 release, providing no word on exactly what is addressed in what is presumably a minor bug fix update. It is believed to fix the “unknown error (-50)” some users would get while syncing iOS devices. No fixes were found as of this writing, but there’s no reason not to get this free update.
This update comes [...]

You might already be familiar of the Metro UI if you have been reading the Windows 8 coverage, Metro UI offers flattened and tiled look, which has its basis in the Windows Phone 7.
Leaked screenshots of the next version of Microsoft Office – often referred to as “Office 15”, have begun to surface around the web. Today, TheHotFix.net leaked a brand new screenshot showing Microsoft Outlook “15” with an overhaul of the Metro user interface:
The new Outlook’s interface is much cleaner, simpler and yet seems to offer what users expect from it. The main window structure seems to be inherited from the older versions but the flattened looks and [...]

Apple has released an update to iTunes, 10.2.1 which is less than one week after iTunes 10.2. iTunes 10.2 enabled support for iOS 4.3 syncing, which we presume is simply a “bug fix update“.
In addition to the iTunes upgrade, Apple has released updates to Java for Mac OS X for both 10.5 Leopard and 10.6 Snow Leopard. The updates are related to security and can be found in the software update application. The update description is exactly the same as for iTunes 10.2, so it is unclear what has been changed since last week’s release at this time. Changes are presumably minor, however, although they may include important bug fixes.
After [...]

A recent report from Business Insider states that Microsoft is all set to unveil the design features of Windows 8 by the end of its fiscal year in June.
This person claims that Microsoft is taking a more Apple-like approach to interface design this time around, and will also be using concepts from the “Metro” interface developed for Windows Phone 7. Ironically, that interface grew out of the Media Center UI that shipped with Windows XP back in 2004, but the Media Center interface was meant to be viewed from up to 10 feet away and controlled with a remote control, whereas Metro is meant to be used with touch [...]
