Many of you are probably getting tired of these “iOS 4.2.1 untethered jailbreak” stories but this news was deserving. The newest version of Greenpois0n RC5 might be adding two important features: custom boot logo and verbose boot. At least that is what pod2g mentioned in his latest tweet.

What is Custom Boot Logo and Verbose Boot?

Verbose boot will help display everything that happens when the device boots up (you can check out a video of a verbose boot in action here). A custom boot logo is what shows when you boot up the device. By default this is a white apple logo. Likewise, the custom recovery logo is the “Connect to iTunes” graphic

Why Does The Current Version Not Support Boot Logo & Verbose Boot?

The current version of the GreenPois0n tool uses GeoHot’s bootrom exploit which is being used as an “injection vector” in order to apply kernel patches (userland jailbreak) to obtain root privileges. Previously, boot logo’s and verbose boot were not possible in GreenPois0n because the bootchain is actually not touched (LLB and iBoot are being code signed as well). For custom boot logo’s and/or verbose boot, you will need a patched iBoot, which you simply just don’t have when you are jailbroken via a userland jailbreak.

iPhone hacker Pod2g who parted from the Chronic Dev Team has already confirmed that the GreenPois0n RC5 tool will untether jailbreak the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch 3G, iPod Touch 4G, and iPad running on iOS 4.2.1 OOB without requiring SHSH blobs for iOS 4.2b3. We know many of you are waiting for the GreenPois0n to officially drop so you can untether your jailbreak.
